Summer Workshop (2019) in Mechanics and Python

AFSC is supported by Sage

16 – 19 May 2019

The Ajit Foundation Science Center organised a four day workshop on basic principles of Mechanics and Python programming. It was conducted by Prof. Vikram Vyas. The workshop is a part of the Ajit Foundation Science Centre’s program on enhancing science education and developing employable skills in Bikaner. Ajit Foundation Science Centre is supported by a donation from Sage Global Giving program.

Aim of the workshop

Mechanics is the starting point of physics education but often the students are ill prepared for it, lacking the understanding of fundamental concepts. The workshop tried to rectify this situation, specially for the students coming from schools that lacked adequate mathematics and physics teachers. Complementing the lectures was a hand on workshop on using the programming language Python to describe motion. Students started on the first day with a descritption of the motion a particle in one dimension and ended on the fourth day with a simulation of the solar system on a computer using Python.

Resource materials from the workshop

The main physics reference for the workshop was the Feynman Lectures in Physics – Volume 1. Slides from the lecture and the corresponding Python notebooks can be downloaded from here. Easiest way to use the Python notebooks is to  install free and open source Python distribution Anaconda
